چکیده

Introduction Studies comparing visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and BOLD signals have found a positive correlation between the VEP amplitude and the magnitude and extent of the BOLD signal [1, 2], but some VEP components are better related to the BOLD signal than others. The strongest spatial correlation have been found between the source location of the N1 peak* and the location of the BOLD signal [3]. While previous studies with simultaneously recorded VEP-fMRI have only compared the correlation between the grand mean VEP and the averaged BOLD signal, there is growing interest in correlating simultaneously acquired VEP and BOLD fMRI data. In this case, however, the N1 peak becomes difficult to identify due to excessive noise amplification of the EEG inside the MR scanner. Therefore, we examined alternative ways to measure neuronal activation in simultansouly recorded VEP-fMRI.

Brain state regulation during normal development : Changes in simultaneously recorded EEG - fMRI intrinsic neuronal activity fluctuations

The transition from adolescence to adulthood is a critical stage in the human lifespan during which the brain still undergoes substantial structural and functional change. The changing frequency composition of the resting state EEG reflects maturation of brain function. This study investigated (post)adolescent brain maturation captured by two independently but simultaneously recorded neuronal s...

Simultaneous Recording of ERP and fMRI for Cortical Source Imaging

Introduction In functional neuroimaging, it is of great interest to combine EEG and fMRI, to take advantage of the high temporal resolution of EEG and high spatial resolution of fMRI [1]. For the integration, it is desirable to acquire EEG and fMRI in a single session to avoid possible discrepancies due to different environmental and cognitive states in separate examinations. However, simultane...

Insights into the Origin of Spontaneous Coherent BOLD fluctuations in a Resting Rat Brain under Varied Isoflurane Anesthesia Depth

Introduction The coherent fluctuations of blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signals have been widely observed in many brain networks of different species at the resting state, and such coherence was hypothesized to result from the underlying anatomical and functional connectivity of brain networks. However, the real mechanism of this observation remained elusive, and even its neural origin is...

Combination of blood oxygen level–dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging and visual evoked potential recordings for abnormal visual cortex in two types of amblyopia

PURPOSE To elucidate the different neuromechanisms of subjects with strabismic and anisometropic amblyopia compared with normal vision subjects using blood oxygen level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (BOLD-fMRI) and pattern-reversal visual evoked potential (PR-VEP). METHODS Fifty-three subjects, age range seven to 12 years, diagnosed with strabismic amblyopia (17 cases), anis...

Correlation between simultaneously recorded Full-band EEG and BOLD at rest

Introduction Several studies have found correlations between EEG bands and BOLD signal (1,2). Full-band EEG (FbEEG) enables investigation of very low (0.010.1 Hz) brain fluctuations which modulate cortical excitability and interictal epileptic activity (3). In this study we investigated the correlation between FbEEG and BOLD signal fluctuations recorded simultaneously. We have hypothesized that...
